The newly elected Fuvahmulah City Council has become the only city council with a majority of women. 

Fuvahmulah City Mayor and councilors for eight constituencies in Fuvahmulah were elected in the April 4 elections. Two of these seats were reserved for women: Dhadimagu and Malegan. 

Of the six other seats, four were won by women. With this, the council now has six women members, marking a majority. 

Male members of the council are Mayor Ismail Rafeeq, Dhiguvaadu councilor Hassan Shiruhaan, and Miskiiymagu councilor Mohamed Shiraar. 

The Dhadimagu constituency results were a tie in the first round. Hence, runoff elections were held yesterday, seeing independent candidate Sheeza Ibrahim winning the seat. 

With Sheeza winning the seat instead of her opponent from PNC, the ruling party has failed to secure a single seat on the Fuvahmulah City Council. 

Cities besides Fuvahmulah, including Male', Kulhudhuffushi, Thinadhoo and Addu, also saw several women councilors getting elected. However, women hold a majority only in the Fuvahmulah council. 

An LGA official confirmed that no island or city holds a female majority in incumbent councils. They noted that women's participation was at a much higher rate in these recent elections compared to ones held before.
