After completing his term as Secretary General of Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) in Ghana, former President Mohamed Nasheed has returned to the Maldives political sphere.

Nasheed moved back to the Maldives last Tuesday.

After the MDP administration came to an end in 2023, Nasheed moved away from politics and took up a role at the environmental organization. He temporarily moved to Ghana to fill the post at CVF in January, 2024.

As per the CVF's website, the term of a Secretary General is three years long.

In a post on his unofficial account, he wrote, "Everyone prepare to return to the nest", which many have interpreted as a signal that he is returning to politics.

Even when he had been living in Ghana, he was active in activities of The Democrats during his infrequent visits to the Maldives. Last year, he rejoined the MDP.

The MDP, meanwhile, recently amended regulations, allowing Nasheed, as a former President, a seat on its National Council.

Amongst changes brought to resolve recent internal rifts, the MDP also formed an ad hoc committee to advise Interim Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa. Nasheed, along with former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, is part of this committee.

The committee is compiled of:

  1. Former President Mohamed Nasheed
  2. Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih
  3. Interim Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa
  4. MDP President Abdulla Shahid
  5. MDP Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Nazil
  6. Former Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail
