A tourist who went snorkeling near GA. Kooddoo was attacked by a shark last Monday. He was bitten on the leg by a shark, with complications leading to his leg needing to be amputated. 

Police said that the victim was initially treated at the GA. Atoll Hospital's ICU, and was later transferred to capital Male' City for further treatment. 

He sustained serious injuries to both his legs, but complications led to one leg having to be amputated, Police said. 

Police stated that they are investigating the incident. 

The UK newspaper, Mirror, reported that the injured tourist is a Spanish gynaecologist named Borja. It reported that Borja suffered extreme blood loss and severe injuries. 

The Mirror cited Spanish newspaper El Periodico Mediterraneo and said the Borja came from Alicante and had been in the Maldives on his honeymoon.

The paper cited Borja's wife Ana's family and said that the shark "took all the flesh from the knee down off her husband's leg with just one bite".

There have been past, infrequent incidents of shark attacks in Maldives' waters. 

Locals have been raising concerns for months that rising shark numbers are putting tourists and fishermen at risk.
