The number of dengue cases that were reported in March are unusually high.

According to the information that was publicized by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) yesterday, March alone saw reports of 535 dengue cases. March 2025 only had 60 reported cases of dengue.

February 2026 saw 428 reported cases of dengue, with just 76 reported cases in February 2025.

The last two months have been the hottest in Maldives' history. Cases of dengue are known to increase during the Iruvai Monsoon.

Due to rising temperatures, the incubation period of the dengue virus in mosquitos shortens and the rate at which mosquitos mature increases. There are more mosquitos in hot and humid environments. This also increased the quantity of mosquito bites.

When looking at the reported dengue cases in March, the highest number of reported cases according to population was from Vaavu Atoll. The second highest was from Alifu Alifu Atoll and third was Shaviyani Atoll.

The HPA has said that it is important to take steps to decrease the diseases spread by mosquitos such as dengue, and that it is important to take protective measures.

Measures that can be taken to protect oneself from dengue

  • To wear clothing that properly covers the body and to use mosquito sprays and lotions.
  • To keep doors and windows closed during dawn, evening and dusk.
  • To not throw empty bottles / cans that can hold water onto the road or in your house and to clean anything that can hold water.

Home treatments for those who fall ill

  • Rest
  • Drink plenty of liquids. Coconut water, sodium packets and soup are good options.
  • Taking paracetamol to deal with fever, body aches and joint aches. If the fever persists for more than three days or if liquids cannot be ingested or if one becomes more tired, it is advised to seek a doctor's advice.
