It has been revealed that in the case where MVR 4 million was stolen from an apartment in Nalahiya Residence on Majeedhee Magu, one of the four suspects who were arrested in March had been sentenced to prison for 10 years in 2022.

The Criminal Court had served Ismail Asif, Daarul Avval / R. Maduvvari with a 10-year prison sentence in September 2022 due to charges against Asif being proven that he had stabbed Ismail Hammad, Fehi Ali / R. Maduvvari with a knife after an altercation occurred while they were on a vessel that catches parrotfish. 

The prosecution charged Asif for attacking Hammad while on a fishing vessel and then throwing him overboard.

Even though Asif was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2022, he only has to serve 7 years and 3 months after taking into account the duration he was held in remand in custody.

However, he was released well before he had served his sentence, and was arrested after a theft case had surfaced where an apartment in Nalahiya Residence had been burgled on 16th March 2026.

Regarding the attack on Hammad, the Criminal Court's sentence reads that both Asif's and Hammad's DNA had been found on the boat where the attack took place. Even though Asif allegedly stated that Hammad's injuries were self-inflicted, evidence that had been submitted showed that the injuries were inflicted by Asif, as was written in the court sentence.

After a difference of opinion led to the attack on the vessel, the sentence states that Hammad had told some police officers that he had been thrown overboard. The sentence by then-Chief Justice of the Criminal Court Judge Ahmed Shakeel reads that the prosecution had submitted evidence that strongly supported Hammad's statement.

Of the four suspects who had been arrested in March in the MVR 4 million theft from an apartment in Nalahiya Residence, the other three aside from Asif are: 

The police stated last night that one of the suspects still has not been apprehended and that they are looking for him.

Even though police are investigating this case, the police said that only MVR 50,000 has been recovered so far.

The police also stated that a large part of the investigation into this case has now been completed, and they are currently doing the final work to complete the investigation phase and request the Prosecutor General's Office to press charges in the case.
