A fire has broken out at the Soneva Jani resort, in Noonu atoll. 

Photos circulating on social media show a structure of the resort engulfed in flames. 

Soneva Jani has since confirmed that the fire incident occurred at The Gathering, an overwater restaurant, and not an accommodation water villa as was earlier reported. 

The fire was contained to the restaurant on the North Jetty. At the time of the incident, the restaurant was closed. 

Police confirmed that they are responding to a fire at a resort in Noonu atoll. 

Police said that they are working alongside MNDF and resort staff to put out the blaze.
