A team from the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources visited F. Feeali yesterday to assess the extent of the damage caused by Thursday's fire. 

The ministry announced in a social media post that the government is assessing the situation and working on providing assistance. No further details have been disclosed yet. 

The fire originated on a fuel boat, and spread to surrounding boats and the island's ice plant and parts of a fuel shed. 

Two grouper fishing vessels, as well as some other boats, were also damaged in the fire. The island's ice plant was also destroyed beyond use. 

Feeali Council estimates that the fire caused MVR 20 million in damages. 

Feeali Council President Moosa Ahmed told Mihaaru News that none of the three vessels that had been destroyed were insured. 

Moosa said that one of the damaged vessels had been repaired recently, during Ramadan. The repairs had cost cost nearly MVR 250,000, according to him. 

He said that the fire affected the livelihood of three families on the island, and had had a significant psychological impact on residents as well. 

Moosa said that he believes the government should provide support for those affected by the fire.
