A session of the MDP National Council has been scheduled for tonight to pass major changes, including the formation of a committee consisting of 5 party leaders to advise the Chairperson on significant matters concerning the management of the party.
Although former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu) announced last night that a solution had been reached regarding the disagreements within the country’s largest opposition party, he did not provide further details.
However, it has been learned that through discussions held by party leaders over the past 2–3 days, an agreement has been reached to provide opportunities for former Presidents within the MDP National Council and to create a five-member interim committee to advise the Chairperson.
The members included in this committee are:
- Former President Mohamed Nasheed
- Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu)
- Former Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail
- Party President Abdulla Shahid
- Interim Chairperson of the party, Abdul Ghafoor Moosa (Gapo)
The final point agreed upon in these discussions was to appoint the two most prominent rivals, Solih and Nasheed, as advisors to the MDP.
A meeting of the MDP National Council will be held at 9:00 PM tonight to decide on these matters. Although the party's meetings are usually held open to the public, it has been decided to keep this meeting secret.
The issue heated up after Nasheed and Fayyaz were not given the opportunity to speak at the rally held last Monday night at Artificial Beach to celebrate the MDP’s success in the local council elections, leading to efforts to remove interim Chairperson Ghafoor from his post. Although the required number of member signatures was collected, it was decided to dismiss the petition following the discussions.
Before that heat could subside, the dismissal of MDP’s Deputy Chairperson (Financial) Ibrahim Waheed (Iburey) and Legal Director Ahmed Mauroof occurred. The situation flared up further when Ghafoor informed the two of their dismissal via a letter. The result was the submission of a no-confidence motion against interim Chairperson Ghafoor with the signatures of 55 members.
However, it is understood that the leaders have now agreed to reinstate Ibrahim Waheed and Mauroof to their positions and to withdraw the no-confidence motion against Ghafoor.
At a rally held last night in his birthplace, Lh. Hinnavaru, to celebrate the victory in the local council elections, Solih stated that all the party's leaders had begun discussions and work to find a solution to the internal issues of the MDP. He stated that what happened this time was the kind of issue that always arises within the MDP.
Solih stated that the internal dispute had become something that brought great disappointment to the general members of the MDP.
"Since that day, we have not remained without discussing or talking about it. Since this problem arose two days ago, all of us leaders, those of us in senior positions in the party, have been discussing and working to find a solution to this," Solih said.
"By the grace of God, as we have reached this point, we have found a solution to this. As the general members desire, we have found ways to work together as a whole leadership by the time we reached this point," he said.
