In this morning's major fire in F. Feeali, an expatriate suffered 60% burn injuries. His condition is critical, and he has been transferred to Male' for further treatment, according to the Faafu Atoll Hospital.
The fire broke out in a fuel boat moored in the Feeali harbour at around 9am today. Despite the attempts of MNDF firefighters, police, and the public, the fire spread to nearby boats, and even to buildings in the vicinity.
Amongst those responding to the fire was 39 year old Delova, from Bangladesh. In his efforts, the fire engulfed him, leaving him with severe burn injuries.
Delova was first treated at the Feeali Health Centre. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was then transferred to the Faafu Atoll Hospital in Nilandhoo.
Faafu Atoll Hospital Manager Abdul Jaleel Ahmed said that a large area of the victim's face and torso had been burned, leaving his condition critical. He was treated in the ICU, but the hospital then decided to transfer him to Male' as he is in need of more extensive care.
It took responders nearly three hours to control the fire. By this time, three boats and the island's ice plant were burned beyond use. The fire also affected a nearby fuel shed, police earlier said.
