The Criminal Court has concluded the hearings for the charges against 8 people for the suspected planning of terrorism and encouragement of terrorism in Th. Thimarafushi after five years.
Suspects were apprehended in January 2025 and were sent to be charged for the accusation of encouraging acts of terrorism and for attempting to conduct an act of terrorism by cooperating with the Islamic State (IS) community.
The suspects being charged are:
- Abdulla Shareef - Thimarafushi / Fehividhuvaruge
- Ahsan Mohamed - Thimarafushi / Asrafee Villa
- Ali Muneez - Thimarafushi / Asrafee Villa
- Mohamed Asir - Thimarafushi / Asurumaage
- Samah Shareef - Thimarafushi / Saimaa
- Ali Arham Mohamed - R. Kandholhudhoo / Fehi Villa
- Abdulla Imad - R. Maduvvari / Beach House
- Ibrahim Looth - N. Kudafari / Rose Mead
The prosecution accused them of various terrorism charges in February 2021.
As per the Prosecutor General's (PG) office, the Criminal Court has concluded the hearing for the case yesterday, and that sentencing is next. As the Criminal Procedure Code requires sentencing within 30 days of the conclusion to the hearing, the PG office has said that they assume sentencing will be carried out before 8th May.
If charges of terrorism are proven, there is a chance lengthy sentences will be heard.
