MNDF firefighters, working alongside police and the public, have managed to bring the fire in F. Feeali under control. 

By the time the fire was put out, immense damage had been caused on the island. 

The fire broke out this morning on a fuel boat moored at the F. Feeali harbour. It then intensified and spread to surrounding boats and buildings in the vicinity of the harbour, including an ice plant and a fuel shed. 

As firefighters managed to control the fire, it had already burned the island's ice plant, two fishing vessels and an additional boat completely beyond use. 

Police earlier said that the fire had also spread to a fuel shed, damaging fuel dispensers and parts of the building.

Residents report that there are heavy fumes across the entire island.   

Feeali School has also closed down for the day, sending students home after interval.

A Bangladeshi crew member of the fuel boat suffered serious burn injuries, and is now under treatment at the island's health centre.
