Dr Salma Rasheed has been reinstated to the post of Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Office in Geneva.

After an audio recording of a phone call allegedly between ruling PNC MP Asma Rasheed and a man, where she tells him to not vote for PNC was leaked on social media, Salma and Maldivian Ambassador to the UAE Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) were dismissed from their posts on Monday. 

Shareef is the son of Asma, MP for Central Maafannu, while Salma is her sister.

It has been learned that Salma was reinstated to her post yesterday. Shareef, however, remains dismissed. 

In the leaked audio, Asma asks the other person on the call to not vote for PNC candidates in last Saturday's Local Council Elections. The ruling party received significantly poor results in the election. 

Shareef and Salma were both appointed to senior positions in the administration soon after President Dr Mohamed Muizzu assumed office.   

In addition to the two, Salma's daughter Aminath Hussain Shareef is also in a senior government position, currently serving as a State Minister at the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources. Her post remains unaffected.
