South Galolhu constituency Meekail Ahmed Naseem has said that opportunities need to be given by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for the younger generation.
In a time where dispute within Maldives' largest opposition party is at a high and voices are calling for the election of a permanent chairperson, Meekail, who has announced that he will be contesting the post, stated via a video posted to social media that the party's aim has to be achieving victory in the 2028 Presidential Election.
However, he also stated that the trust that has been lost within members of MDP needs to be regained and their ranks strengthened.
Meekail went on to say that it can be achieved by someone who prioritizes the interests of the party's members instead of certain leaders and individuals, and by that person taking charge of the party's steering wheel. Meekail said that that person needs to be someone who can run the party without looking at any specific people.
"Instead of the party being run by the same people, the same thinking and the same mindset, the younger generation needs to be given an opportunity within the party's leadership," said Meekail.
The internal dispute within the opposition party came to a head regarding the ceremony held by MDP in celebration of their victory in the Local Council Election.
During the ceremony, supporters of former President Mohamed Nasheed and former Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail were saying that the two leaders were initially given the opportunity to give a speech at the ceremony, but it had been rescinded at the last second. Interim Chairperson and Hanimaadhoo constituency MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa's (Gapo) actions were subject to criticism, with calls being made for him to resign.
Meekail, who is fulfilling his second term as a member of Parliament, stated that he is contesting for the role of chairperson with 16 years of experience.
"I am requesting opportunities be given within MDP's leadership for the younger generation. I will continue to stand with you all no matter the situation," said Meekail.
