The opposition MDP’s Deputy Chairperson - Administrative, Ibrahim Waheed (Iburey), was also dismissed from his post today.

In a letter sent to Waheed, signed by the party's interim Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa (Gapo), it was stated that according to Article 70 of the MDP Charter, the individual elected as the party's Chairperson appoints a Deputy Chairperson and a Deputy Chairperson (Financial) with the consent of the National Council to assist in fulfilling the Chairperson's duties.

The letter noted that the article also states that during the Chairperson's term, a Deputy Chairperson may be removed and another person appointed to the post of Deputy Chairperson with the consent of the National Council.

Therefore, referring to that article, the letter said that since it does not state that the consent of the National Council is required in the event of removing a Deputy Chairperson, Waheed was being removed from the position of the party's Administrative Deputy Chairperson under that article.

However, the specific reason for Waheed’s dismissal was not mentioned in the letter.

In a post on X sharing the letter, Waheed stated that he was removed from the post in violation of the MDP Charter. He further stated that Ghafoor has "properly gone mad."

Referring to Article 100 of the Charter, Waheed stated that those elected to elective positions can remain until their term expires.

Along with Waheed's dismissal, MDP's Legal Director Ahmed Mauroof was also removed from his post today. That letter also did not specify the reason for his removal.

However, both of these dismissed individuals are supporters of MDP's former Chairperson, Fayyaz Ismail.

The commencement of these dismissals within the party comes at a time when internal friction has escalated due to the dissatisfaction caused by former President Mohamed Nasheed not being given the opportunity to speak at the rally held to celebrate MDP’s success in the council elections. MDP activists have also expressed their displeasure on social media regarding this matter.

Regarding the issue, Ghafoor said that "the talk was spread in a way that disrupts harmony" while efforts were being made to grant Nasheed the opportunity to speak.
