Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources and Vice President of the People's National Congress (PNC) Ahmed Shiyam has stated that yesterday's election was an important one, and that the party’s losses in the three votes provided an indication of what needs to be done moving ahead.

Opposition MDP won most of the seats in the Local Council Election and the Women's Development Committee Election. While MDP secured mayoral seats in five cities, the referendum vote regarding the Presidential Election and Parliamentary Election being held on the day saw 70 percent of the votes go against it, even though it was what the government had backed.

Taking the results into account, PNC vice-president Ahmed Shiyam said they should be “deeply reflected on” and seen as an opportunity for change. He added that both the government and the PNC remain focused on the future.

"This was an important election that showed what needs to be done and the path to be taken. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has given his assurance that the positive changes that need to be brought about by the government will be done as per the will of the people," as was written by Shiyam on social media.

According to Shiyam, President Muizzu spoke of the beautiful example of democracy when referring to the results of the election.

"This government will continue to provide proper governance to the people along with the changes the people request," said Shiyam.

After the election results were announced last night, President Muizzu said the government would implement positive changes in line with the will of the people.
