The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has lost council seats in AA. Ukulhas, an island that has had major support for the party since the introduction of the political party system to Maldives.

MDP and the People's National Congress (PNC) competed head to head in the Local Council and Women's Development Committee Elections that were held yesterday. Along with the Council President seat, the three seats for Ukulhas were won by PNC. As the island has a population of less than 2,000, there are only three seats for the Ukulhas Council.

Ukulhas, an island that supports both MDP and local tourism, had an MDP majority for years, until now. A majority of voters from Ukulhas voted for PNC candidates.

Ukulhas Council President and MDP member Shaukath Ibrahim has lost his position, who has been president since councilors began being elected with the decentralization system. This is the fourth time Shaukath has run in the election.

Ali Waheed has been elected the Council President of Ukulhas.

Two of the three seats in the Women's Development Committee were won by PNC candidates.

While MDP has lost Ukulhas in the Local Council Election, the island has been a hub for historic meetings held by MDP.

The congress held for former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to be granted his ticket in 2018 was in Ukulhas. MDP also held historic activities at the convention centre that was built by the government at the time.

MDP also paid special attention to the island during every election campaign.
