As per the provisional results from the Local Council Election held on 4th April, five city mayoral positions and a majority of the council presidential seats have been won by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
The provisional results of yesterday's election that were publicized by the Elections Commission (EC) show that a total 246 seats covering cities and island councils were won by MDP.
The 246 seats are split into five mayoral positions for cities, 70 Council President seats and 171 council member seats.
The ruling People's National Congress (PNC) won a total of 218 seats, split into 68 Council President seats and 150 council member seats.
Independent candidates come in third for the number of seats that were won.
- Independent - 81 seats
- Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) - 10 seats
- The Democrats - 2 seats
- Adhaalath Party - 1 seat
- Jumhooree Party - 1 seat
Along with the mayoral seats, MDP has also won a majority of the city seats.
Aside from the Villimale' constituency seat, MDP has won the rest of the seats in the Male' City Council.
Of the 11 members in the Addu City Council, PNC won one of the seats. MDP won the rest.
MDP won all but one of the seats in Fuvahmulah City, with the one being won by an independent candidate.
PNC won two of the six council members seats in Thinadhoo City Council, with the other four being won by MDP.
PNC won the Southwest Kulhudhuffushi City constituency seat, with the rest won by MDP.
In yesterday's referendum on holding the presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day, the majority voted against the move.
Of those who were eligible to vote, 192,549 people had voted on the referendum, with 68.7 percent being opposed to both elections being held on the same day.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated yesterday that he will respectfully accept the decisions of the three elections.
Regarding PNC's losses in the elections, the President posted on X, stating: “I respectfully accept the results of today’s local council and women’s development committee elections and referendum polls.”
"I assure the beloved Maldivian citizens that, with God’s grace, I will continue working to address and correct the issues within the government, in line with the sentiments of the people," he wrote.
