Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that in the three elections held today, opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has secured wins in multiple constituencies, and the people of the Maldives have said a resounding 'no' to the government.
Maldives saw the Local Council elections, Women's Development Committee elections, and the referendum on holding the presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day, held concurrently today.
As vote counting proceeds, preliminary results have come in for several islands and cities.
MDP has won the mayoral seat in all five cities, with incumbent MDP mayors all being re-elected for a second term.
The referendum has also seen the majority voting against holding the two main elections on the same day, as per preliminary results received so far.
In a post on X, Nasheed said that the MDP has won today's election through defeating the government with a large margin.
"All cities, most islands, and in the referendum, the people have said a resounding 'no' to the government," he wrote.
As per preliminary results of today's nation-wide Local Council Elections, MDP has secured the mayor seats for a second term in the cities of Male', Kulhudhuffushi, Thinadhoo, Fuvahmulah, and Addu.
Except for Thinadhoo, MDP won all the four other seats with a large margin.
Competition in Thinadhoo City was tight, with MDP's incumbent mayor Saudh Ali and PNC candidate Mohamed Ajeeb posting closely matched results, with a difference of only about 50 votes.
In addition to the mayoral seats, MDP has also secured majority wins in the City Councils.
MDP has also won council seats and WDC seats across several islands.
