Opposition MDP has stated that not handing out three separate ballot papers, each for the Local Council Election, the Women's Development Committee Election and the referendum vote is deeply concerning and that it is being done to compromise ballot secrecy.

Every voter will receive three ballot papers for the three ongoing elections. Each of those are to be placed into their respective ballot boxes. However, a voter can request to not cast their vote for any of the three elections, reducing the number of ballot papers they receive.

During the press conference that was held by the Elections Commission (EC) last night, EC President Mohamed Zahid stated that any voter can take part in any of the three elections. 

Zahid said that if the voter desires a specific ballot paper, then that is what will be given.

MDP expressed concern on X regarding the matter, stating that not handing out three separate ballot papers is an attempt to be rid of ballot secrecy. The party accused the government of intimidating government employees so they can infringe on their right to vote, with the EC's decisions enabling this.

MDP has called for such acts to not take place.

President of the EC Zahid stated last night that voters who do not want to vote in a certain election can vocally request it in front of the observers. He also stated that this is being done so that everyone involved will be aware should a problem occur as the voting stage goes on.

"We will provide the voter with three ballot papers. If they do not want to cast their vote in a specific election, then we will not provide them with that ballot paper. We will announce that that individual does not want that certain ballot paper. It will be shared and announced," said the President of the EC.

"So, observers and other personnel will take note of it, with arrangements being made when it needs to be carried on."
