The foundation stone has been laid for the project to build 2,000 housing units in HDh. Kulhudhuffushi.
The foundation stone for the project, which is being carried out by a company called Team One India Private Limited, was laid during a ceremony held Wednesday night on the island by Housing Minister Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam, HDC Managing Director Ali Zuhair, Member of Parliament for Kulhudhuffushi North constituency Mohamed Dawood, Member of Parliament for Kulhudhuffushi South constituency Farhath Mohamed, and Team One India’s Design Director Basheer Ahmed.
At the ceremony, Zuhair stated that these 2,000 housing units are being constructed under the pledge made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to provide a permanent solution to the housing issues faced by the residents of the city.
Zuhair said this project is being carried out under the "Housing for All" policy inaugurated by this government to solve the housing problems faced in the Maldives. According to him, under this project, 1,156 flats will be built in mixed residential buildings, alongside the development of housing units on private residential plots.
The project involves the construction of thirteen 14-story towers. Each floor will consist of 12 flats. These three-bedroom flats are 900-square-foot units.
Zuhair said the development of fully resourced facilities would help ease housing difficulties, giving people the chance to live with peace of mind in their own homes. He added that delays in laying the foundation stone for the contractor-financed project were due to the extensive administrative work required.
However, he noted that the Indian company to which the project has been awarded for commencement has 30 years of experience in the fields of design, planning, construction, and engineering, and is a company that has successfully completed works in various countries across the world.
Furthermore, he stated that preparations are also underway to restart the work on 400 housing units in Kulhudhuffushi that had come to a halt. Those consist of five 11-story towers.
Physical work on building the 400 housing units in Kulhudhuffushi initially began in May 2023. At that time, the project was awarded to the joint venture company of Donbez Private Limited and Twenty Third Metallurgical Construction Group Co. Ltd.
However, as the project had stalled, it is being restarted by awarding it to Rainbow Construction. Zuhair said that this project would also bring significant relief to the housing issue.
