Police officers receive allowances after two years in office

The salary revisions for police and the Maldives National Defence Force were part of a campaign pledge by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. Similar pay increases for MNDF personnel are expected to take effect from next month.

Maldives Police Service has begun issuing allowances to officers who have completed two years under the revised state pay framework.

The move follows changes introduced on 1 March 2024, when police salaries were increased by 35 percent as part of a broader restructuring of public sector pay.

Under the new framework, previous allowances were consolidated into four components: basic salary, position allowance, job allowance and risk allowance.

Police said the latest payments reflect officers transitioning to the second level of the framework after completing two years in service under the revised system.

Eligibility applies to officers who have remained in the same rank and grade for two years and achieved an average performance score of above 75 percent over two consecutive years.

Police noted that salaries may vary as officers are periodically reassigned across departments.

Constables, previously the lowest-paid rank, have seen salaries rise from MVR 11,810 to at least MVR 15,500 per month following the adjustments. Patrol officers receive an additional MVR 1,000, along with MVR 750 for shift duty.

A food allowance is also provided to officers working in locations where meals are not provided, as well as to those whose duties do not afford them the time to have regular meals.
