An agreement was signed yesterday with a Saudi Arabian company where they will be financing Maldives' largest mosque yet, capable of accommodating 10,000 worshippers simultaneously.
Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed stated last night that the mosque will be built in Hulhumale' and that the agreement was signed with Al Rajhi in Madinah.
"We are aiming to begin the construction of this mosque in conjunction with the 900th year of Maldives becoming an Islamic nation," as was written in the message to the media by Minister Shaheem.
The minister had said previously that once the funding for the mosque is confirmed, the practical work in building the mosque will begin on 13th September 2026.
The mosque will be located between Hulhumale' Phase 2 and Hulhumale' Phase 3, with the project being announced yesterday by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during his presidential statement.

Minister Shaheem had stated that the complex upon which the mosque is to be built will include Waqf buildings, a commercial building and parking, with benefits generated from the Waqf buildings going towards matters of Islam in Maldives.
Maldives' largest Islamic structure is currently the Islamic Center in Male', built 41 years ago during former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's government. The center has the capacity to accommodate 4,500 worshippers simultaneously.
The mosque will be designed by foreign professionals, with funding for all stages of the project, including design, being funded by Al Rajhi, as was said by the minister.
He also said that those who funded the project will be present at the mosque's groundbreaking ceremony.
