Former Education Minister Dr. Aishath Ali stated today that the change brought to the High Achievers Scholarship is an unfair one.
Regarding the change brought to one of the scholarships given to students who achieve good results in A-Levels, she said in a post on Facebook that it is a concern that students' future opportunities are being narrowed due to subjects that have no connection to the fields they have chosen to pursue.
Aishath Ali, who served as the Education Minister in the previous government, also stated that such a policy, instead of assessing the true potential and skills of students, would close the paths available for them to move forward.
The High Achievers Scholarship, introduced nine years ago, is awarded to those who obtain an A grade in all subjects at A-Level.
However, under the new change brought by the Higher Education Ministry to that criteria, the scholarship will be awarded by obtaining at least one A*.
Aishath Ali stated that this is an unfair decision that will diminish the rights of students who work hard to achieve the scholarship with high results in stream subjects.
"Due to such policies, instead of assessing the true potential and skills of students, the paths for those children to move forward will be closed," she said.
"The hope is that, considering the adverse effects students may face due to this change, this criteria will be reviewed in a way that provides equal opportunities for all students."
