The Supreme Court has scheduled to deliver its verdict tomorrow on the case filed to stop the public referendum on holding the Presidential Election and the People's Majlis Election on the same day.
Lawyers Aik Ahmed Easa and Ibrahim Shiyam filed the constitutional case at the Supreme Court to stop the referendum, which is scheduled to be held alongside the Local Council Elections next Saturday. While the Supreme Court concluded the hearings for the case last week, the delivery of the verdict is now scheduled for tomorrow afternoon.
The two lawyers submitted to the Supreme Court that the question included in the Presidential Decree issued by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu regarding the referendum is in violation of the Constitution, and argued that the referendum cannot be held with that specific question included.
A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court, presided over by Chief Justice Abdul Ghanee Mohamed, is hearing the case. The bench also includes Judge Ali Rasheed Hussain, Judge Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim, Judge Hussain Shaheed, and Judge Abdulla Hameed.
Lawyer Ali Hussain also submitted a constitutional case regarding the referendum. However, the Supreme Court decided not to accept that case.
