Arson suspect gets 30 day remand extension

The Criminal Court has extended remand in custody by 30 days of the arson suspect arrested in relation to the fire at G. Hiyaa Roadhi.

The Criminal Court has extended remand in custody by 30 days of the arson suspect arrested in relation to the fire at G. Hiyaa Roadhi. 

The suspect has been named as Hussain Shahban, 29, of Shabnam House, L. Maabaidhoo. 

 He was initially remanded for five days. 

The court order stated that he has been remanded for an additional 30 days, citing that he may pose a danger to society. 

Police said that Shahban has a prior criminal record. 

CCTV footage circulating on social media shows a man enter G. Hiyaa Roadhi about six minutes before the fire breaks out. The premises were being used as a warehouse. The fire occurred at around 11am on March 18. 

The video, initially posted by an anonymous account, shows a man in a black and white checkered shirt and dark sunglasses arrive on a Honda Wave motorcycle, park it and enter G. Hiyaa Roadhi. 

As per the timestamps in the video, he enters the house at 10:33am. He is seen leaving just minutes later, at 10:39. By 10:43, smoke is seen billowing out of the building, with crowds beginning to gather. 

By the time firefighters managed to put out the fire, the warehouse was burned beyond use.
