President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has rejected claims from opposition Maldivian Democratic Party that he is seeking to hold the two elections simultaneously with the intention of extending the presidential term.

Speaking on SanguTV's 'Espresso with Raees' program, the President asserted that he has no intentions of extending the presidential term.

A public referendum has been scheduled to be held alongside the April 4 Local Council and Women's Development Committee Elections. The referendum seeks public opinion on the amendment brought to the Constitution to hold the presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day. MDP has alleged that the purpose of this is to extend the presidential term.

A youth posed a question about this to President Muizzu during SanguTV's show, to which he replied that he has no such intentions.

"No, I have no such intention. I have also seen those banners, and I wonder which country we are living in. Surely, no such thing is involved in the referendum being taken in this country," the President responded.

"...this has nothing about extending the presidential term, or shortening it. I do not intend to do any such thing, nor will I do so."

The President maintains that holding the elections simultaneously will not only be more cost-effective, but will contribute towards strengthening the two powers of State. It will also bring an end to administrations securing super majority in parliament, he said.
