Dispatch of election equipment to polling stations begins

The Elections Commission has begun dispatching equipment to polling stations ahead of Saturday’s local council and Women’s Development Committee elections.

The commission said 347 polling stations will be set up across atolls outside the Male' area for the three votes.

Equipment has already been dispatched to stations in Haa Alifu, Raa, Thaa, Laamu, Gaafu Alifu, Gaafu Dhaalu, Fuvahmulah City and Addu City.

Items bound for Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, Noonu, Baa, Lhaviyani, Alifu Alifu, Alifu Dhaalu, Vaavu, Meemu, Faafu and Dhaalu atolls will be transported by sea.

Delivery to islands in Male' Atoll is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. The commission said the distribution process is being carried out with the assistance of police.

A total of 1,592 candidates are contesting the Local Council elections, while1,368 candidates are contesting the Women’s Development Committee elections.

Voters will also take part in a referendum on whether to hold Presidential and Parliamentary elections simultaneously on the same day.
