Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said residents of Addu are satisfied with the development delivered under the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) government.

Speaking at a rally in Hithadhoo, Addu City, ahead of the local council elections, Solih said the administration had implemented projects aligned with the needs and expectations of the public.

He said MDP had spent MVR 8 billion on developing Addu City over its five years in government.

According to Solih, this included the construction of 119 kilometres of roads, reclamation of 190 hectares of land, and the allocation of five islands for tourism development.

“We were able to complete the harbours of all the islands in this city. We did it because a sustainable economy can only be built by undertaking such projects,” he said.

Solih added that a Chinese company had been contracted to develop a 2,500-bed tourism project in Hankede as part of efforts to boost economic activity.

“We did many things to develop this city in this way,” he said.

He said the MDP believes the Maldives can be effectively developed and governed through decentralization, adding that projects were carried out based on public demand and priorities.
