The Maldives has stated that attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure during the ongoing war in the Middle East are unacceptable and has called on the world to exert further pressure to bring the conflict to an end.
The Maldives made this call during an emergency meeting held on the sidelines of the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council regarding the attacks being carried out by Iran against Gulf countries.
Delivering the statement on behalf of the Maldives, the Permanent Representative to the UN Offices in Geneva, Dr. Salma Rasheed, said that the Maldives condemns the attacks on civilian infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, Oman, Kuwait, and the UAE.
The Maldives expressed concern over the immense disruptions caused by this war to oil and food supply chains, as well as to maritime and air transportation.
Therefore, the Maldives called for prioritizing the peaceful resolution of issues without the use of force, in accordance with the UN Charter, and urged for the de-escalation of the situation in the Middle East and an immediate ceasefire in line with UN Security Council resolutions. Furthermore, to facilitate this, the Maldives today called for the international community to accelerate and expand efforts to bring a peaceful resolution through diplomatic relations and dialogue.
The Maldives has co-sponsored the resolution titled "Human rights implications of the Islamic Republic of Iran's unprovoked attacks against Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Jordan," which was proposed during the emergency debate.
Following the attacks initiated by the United States and Israel against Iran on the 28th of February, Iran began launching retaliatory strikes against Israel and US military bases located in Middle Eastern countries.
However, in response to Israeli attacks on Iran’s energy production centers, Iran has attacked some oil and gas production factories in Gulf countries.
