Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim revealed today that MVR 10 billion was spent on fuel imports in 2025.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office today, Minister Thoriq said that Maldives is heavily dependent on imported fuel to generate energy, with MVR 10 billion spent on fuel imports within the last year.

He said that 10 percent of the GDP is spent on fuel imports.

Electricity generation in most islands is through generators, Thoriq said, with generators of 310MW installed across islands, 298MW in resorts and 20MW capacity in industrial islands.

As per statistics shared by Thoriq, 7,965 barrels of diesel are used daily to generate electricity in populated islands, with a total of 2.9 million diesel barrels needed annually.

As the country works towards developing the energy industry, it is prioritizing renewable energy, Thoriq said. He noted that several renewable energy projects are being conducted across the country.
