PNC's mayoral candidate for Addu City, Mushrif Ali, has stated that he will not seek a second term as the city's mayor without finding a permanent solution to the electricity issues facing Addu.
In a post shared on social media, Mushrif detailed the current situation in Addu. He expressed concern that power cuts occur while people are eating, sleeping, or even in the bathroom.
Noting that this is a very worrying issue, Mushrif stated that the primary reason for the power outages in Addu is the inability to generate enough electricity to meet demand.
He pointed out that although the powerhouse used to provide electricity to the connected islands of Addu requires 13 megawatts of power, its current condition is very poor.

Mushrif said that many engines are operating at only 30 or 40 percent, yet the necessary expenses for the engines must still be paid regularly.
"Very recently, the electricity for the entire island went out. It was because a rat got into some board. This means we are still unable to properly maintain these places," Mushrif said.
According to Mushrif, the condition of the supply network used to provide electricity to the connected islands of Addu is also very poor. One reason for this is the damage caused to cables during the period when the roads of those islands were being constructed.

"Furthermore, the transformers on the roads have also become significantly outdated," he said.
Mushrif stated that since electricity is a basic right, providing that service to the citizens is an obligation upon the leader of the city.
However, Mushrif noted that as the current Mayor of Addu, Ali Nizar, concludes a five-year term with an MDP supermajority, every resident of Addu must question why a permanent solution was not achieved despite having the power and authority.
The assurance he gave is that if he is elected as Mayor this time, he will not contest for the next term without finding a permanent solution to the Addu electricity issue.
