The Eid sermon delivered across Maldives on Friday urged people to avoid sports and activities considered contrary to Islamic culture during Eid celebrations.

Scholars reminded worshippers to observe Shari’ah guidelines while marking the festival.

“Let us not allow sports and activities that are alien to Islamic culture in our festivities,” the sermon said.

The sermon emphasized that Eid is a time to express joy, encouraging people to share happiness with others and exchange gifts in a spirit of love, compassion and brotherhood.

“Today is the day of giving and generosity after a month of fasting. Islamic holidays begin with a large social gathering,” the sermon said, referring to the Eid prayer as an opportunity for people to meet, greet and exchange well wishes.

It also highlighted the importance of inclusivity, noting that Eid is a celebration in which all should take part, including Muslims of different backgrounds.

The sermon reiterated the obligation to pay Fitr Zakat before Eid prayers so that those in need can share in the celebrations.

Worshippers were also urged to avoid jealousy and division, strengthen bonds of friendship and fulfil one another’s rights.

“Muslims should first fulfil their duties to Allah. It is to worship Him alone,” the sermon said, adding that this is followed by responsibilities towards parents.

Eid prayers were held in large congregations across the country, with the main gathering in Male' taking place at Maafannu Stadium.
