It has been learned that the decision to release one of the individuals prosecuted by the state in the brutal murder of Naeema Moosa in N. Manadhoo was made because he is someone who requires regular blood transfusions, and due to difficulties in administering these transfusions while in jail, his family had requested his release.

Hassan Fawaz of Vinares, N. Manadhoo, was released from custody today in consideration of his medical condition.

In the case where Naeema was found murdered after being attacked with sharp objects inside her home in April 2023, the state is prosecuting Abdul Wahid Rifas of Finifenmaage, N. Manadhoo, and Azuham Abdul Shakoor of Fehivilaage, N. Manadhoo, in addition to Fawaz.

"Mihaaru News" has learned that since 21-year-old Fawaz is a young man suffering from Thalassemia who requires regular blood transfusions, the PG Office decided to release him from custody following the family's request.

However, Fawaz was released from custody with strict conditions imposed by the court. These include:

  • Sharing medical documents proving he is receiving treatment with the PG Office and the Criminal Court once every 15 days.
  • Not committing any illegal acts or further crimes while released from custody.
  • Attending court on time.
  • Not leaving his home between 6:00 PM and 8:00 AM the following morning, except for seeking medical treatment.
  • Presenting himself to the nearest police station to sign daily between 8:00 AM and 12:00 PM, except in circumstances where he must attend another location for medical treatment.
  • Not traveling outside of Malé.
  • Not communicating or meeting with anyone believed to be a witness in the case, and not influencing witnesses.

The PG Office stated that the Correctional Service and the Police will ensure that the conditions imposed on Fawaz by the court are being followed.

"Furthermore, if Hassan Fawaz violates any of the conditions imposed, this office will request the court to return him to jail custody," the PG Office's statement read.

According to the office, in consideration of the advice given by doctors regarding Fawaz's medical condition and the sensitivity of the illness, the office requested the Criminal Court to grant him leniency in custody under conditions as a special measure to protect the Right to Life provided under Article 21 of the Constitution.
