Police have launched an investigation after a cat was found killed by hanging in HA. Hoarafushi. 

The abuse and killing of a cat on the island was reported to Police last Thursday night, Police said. 

Police have now questioned three individuals, they said. 

A video of the killed cat has been circulating on social media. The Instagram post sharing the video wrote that the cat had been pregnant, and that photos and videos of the abuse and killing of the cat had been shared with them by a Hoarafushi resident. 

Another video shows the cat being dragged after it was killed. The perpetrators then threw the body into the sea. 

The social media post also included photos of three individuals who they alleged are suspects. 

There has been widespread outrage after the footage came to light. Accusations have also been raised that the authorities turn a blind eye despite animal cruelty becoming commonplace. 

A similar case had come to light in 2022 as well. 

Abusing an animal or neglecting one under a person's care is an offence punishable by one month and six days in prison under the law.
