The remains of two of the five victims who died in the fire at an expatriate accommodation block in Adh. Dhigurah are to be flown to Bangladesh today.
As reported in Bangladeshi newspaper, The Daily Star, the remains of victims Saadhar Ali and Shafeequl Islam are to be transferred to Bangladesh today, according to the country's Foreign Ministry.
The fire broke out in the early hours of Friday when a gas cylinder exploded while some residents were cooking food for suhoor.
All five victims whose lives were claimed in the tragic incident were from Bangladesh. The victims are Rajudin Islam, Saadhar Ali, Robin Mollah, Shafeequl Islam and Noornabi Sarkar.
Two others, Jamaluddin and Saddam Hossain, also from Bangladesh, sustained serious injuries in the fire.
Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) said yesterday that the conditions of both remain serious. The two are still on ventilator support.
Bangladesh High Commissioner to Maldives Dr MD Nazmul Islam and other senior officials visited the victims at IGMH. The newspaper also reported that the High Commissioner had gone to the Galolhu Mortuary, where the bodies of the deceased are being kept.
The Daily Star further reported that the High Commission had contacted the families of those affected and offered support.
Officials from the High Commission also visited the site of the fire. They have arranged accommodation for the other residents of the accommodation block.
Police stated that they received reports of the fire at 1:57am, with officers promptly responding by 1:58am. When police arrived, there were strong flames rising out of the house's kitchen.
Police, with assistance from the public, broke down a wall of the house to reach victims trapped inside.
They rescued seven individuals found unconscious inside the residence and transferred them to the island's health centre. Even by this time, five individuals had already succumbed to the fire.
