The Criminal Court has handed a seven-year prison sentence to a man convicted of assault with a sharp object.
Police confirmed today that the Criminal Court has sentenced a man charged with assault with a sharp object based on a police investigation.
The convicted man is Mohamed Shafeeq, of Jan'bureezgasdhoshuge, GDh. Gahdhoo.
He was charged with assault with a sharp object or a dangerous weapon under the Prohibition of the Issuance of Threats and Possession of Dangerous and Sharp Weapons Act in relation to a violent altercation that occurred near the Vilimale' Ferry Terminal on February 14, 2023.
Police said that the accused had attacked and injured an individual with a sharp object during this altercation. They stated that their investigation had gathered evidence from the scene, taken witness statements, and worked to uncover the motive behind the altercation.
The court case considered evidence gathered through the Police investigation, witness statements and other evidence, Police said.
According to Police, Shafeeq was sentenced last Tuesday.
With remand period considered as time served, Shafeeq now has to serve four years in prison.
Police also said that in the preliminary hearing, Shafeeq had denied the charges and claimed he had not been present at the location of the altercation, and had submitted evidence to support his claim. However, he had later admitted to the crime in the summary statement.
This marks a success in their efforts to investigate violent crimes and bring perpetrators to justice, Police said.
Police assured that they would continue to strive to maintain peace and security in society, investigating violent crimes and ensuring those involved face legal consequences.
