Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has revealed today that two of the expatriates injured in the fire at an accommodation block in ADh. Dhigurah last night are currently on ventilator support, and their condition is serious.
The fire broke out at around 2am last night, leaving three people injured and claiming the lives of five others.
Two of the injured men were transferred to Male' for further treatment as their conditions were critical. The third has been discharged after receiving treatment at the island's health centre.
An IGMH Media Official informed Mihaaru News that the bodies of the five deceased men were also brought to Male' this evening as some tests are required.
The condition of the two injured men currently hospitalized at IGMH is serious, they said. However, details of injuries sustained were not disclosed.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that the fire was caused by a gas leak. Residents of the island said that the fire broke out while two people had been cooking. Others living at the premises had been asleep at the time. Reportedly, the accommodation block houses 30 expatriates.
The Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has also launched an investigation into the incident.
Many accommodation blocks for expatriate workers are widely seen as unsafe, substandard, and violating basic human rights and dignity. There have been numerous tragic incidents in such places, leading to injury and even loss of life.
