President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said that he does not believe that the government should move forward by excluding councils and taking power from them.
The President made this statement after PNC's motorbike rally as part of their Local Council Election campaign.
President Muizzu said that the council plays a major role in the development needed for cities.
The President wishes to further strengthen the system and closely serve the public, stating that the upcoming election requires the full cooperation from citizens.
President Muizzu went on to say that he fully believes in the council system and that work continues to be done within the system to progress it even further.
"I do not believe in taking power from and excluding councils. As everything that needs to be done for islands is to be done for cities, if they can be done within a decentralized system, it will benefit the citizens the most," said President Muizzu.
The President requests government candidates be elected to seats for both the councils and the Women's Development Committee's (WDC).
President Muizzu continued by stating that the Presidential Election is the election that sees the highest number of votes from citizens, and that if the Parliamentary Election is held on the same day, the opportunity for citizens to elect their preferred members will only increase.
