The government has decided to introduce green number plates for electric vehicles (EVs) being driven in Maldives.
As per Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen's post on X last night, an announcement was made regarding the introduction of special green number plates for EVs.
"Soon, for the first time in the Maldives, electric vehicles will carry green number plates, making them easily identifiable on our roads," as was written in the post.
"This initiative promotes cleaner mobility and supports President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's climate commitments announced at COP29," wrote the minister.
Images of sample EV plates were also shared by the minister in his post. The letters on private EV number plates will be in white, with the letters on taxi EV number plates in yellow.
The minister's post states that the licence plates are being introduced under the seventh amendment to the Land Transport Act.
As the number plates for EVs are being introduced, the government is working with the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to launch their taxi line service for Fitr Eid.
MTCC will provide the taxi service using EVs, with a total 100 cars in three different sizes to be imported to Maldives.
