The Maldives has today condemned the attack targeting the Consulate General of the UAE located in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, amidst the ongoing war in the Middle East.
In a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry, it said that targeting such diplomatic premises is a violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The statement also noted that the Maldives will remain in solidarity with the government and the people of the UAE.
Following the initiation of sudden attacks on Iran by the United States and Israel late last month, Iran has been retaliating by attacking US centers located in Gulf countries. Foreign news agencies have reported that the strike on the center in Iraq was one such attack.
The Counter-Terrorism Service of Iraqi Kurdistan stated yesterday that three drones were shot down near the UAE Consulate last Monday. Debris from one of those drones caused damage to the UAE Consulate.
The UAE has called on Iraq to investigate the attack on the consulate.
