Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed's party Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) has revealed that they are in support of holding the presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day. 

The party said in a statement that in their view, merging the two elections would be most beneficial in light of the country's economic status and in maintaining peace and stability.

The party said that it agrees with the government stance that holding the two elections together would contribute immensely towards debt management and lowering expenditure. They maintained that it would be an important step taken for the country's future. 

The party expressed support for merging the elections, and asserted that it would always back what is done in the best interests of the people. 

MDA said that its leader Siyam consistently advocates for improving the public's standards of living, social cohesion and economic stability. 

A bill of amendments to the Constitution to hold both elections simultaneously was submitted to parliament, which was subsequently passed with the support of government-aligned MPs. However, the bill can only be implemented through gaining support in a public referendum. The referendum is now scheduled to be held on April 4, alongside the Local Council and Women's Development Committee elections. 

While the government is campaigning in favour of merging the elections, opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) opposes the moves. MDP has submitted a case to the High Court as well seeking to halt the referendum.
