The Maldives has condemned the ongoing attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran, as well as the strikes launched by Iran against Gulf nations, which Iran claims are in retaliation.
In a statement released by the Foreign Ministry, it stated that the Maldives strongly condemns the attacks being carried out by Iran against Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, and other allied nations.
"In particular, such incidents targeting the airports and oil production facilities of Gulf countries are blatant violations of international laws and the Geneva Convention.
Furthermore, the Maldivian government regrets that Iran is attacking Gulf countries even though they have not launched counter-attacks against Iran," the statement read.
The statement noted concern over the situation facing the Middle East due to the attacks initiated by Israel and the US against Iran, and particularly condemned in the strongest terms the attack on an Iranian girls' school, which resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives.
The government highlighted that as the attacks continue, the situation in the Gulf region is deteriorating further, posing a barrier to establishing peace. Consequently, the Maldives has called upon all parties to cease hostilities immediately. The government concluded its statement by calling on the international community to expand diplomatic efforts and strengthen work to establish peace in the Gulf region.
While Israel and the US attacked Iran on the 28th of last month, killing the country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior officials, Iran has been launching retaliatory strikes against various Gulf nations, claiming to target US positions.
However, these strikes have also targeted civilian areas, resulting in civilian deaths and extensive damage.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has previously stated that he is in communication with the leaders of Arab nations to demonstrate that the Maldives' support lies with them regarding the war in the Middle East.
