The Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) will cover travel expenses for individuals who come forward to give testimony regarding the sighting of the Shawwal moon, as in previous years.

The moon sighting is scheduled for Wednesday next week.

Those in Male' who sight the moon are required to testify before a judge at a Male' court. On other islands, witnesses must present their testimony before the magistrate of the island’s Magistrate’s Court.

If an island does not have a magistrate, witnesses may testify before the magistrate responsible for that island’s court, the DJA said.

The agency confirmed that travel costs related to providing testimony will be covered.

Witnesses are also asked to provide details such as the approximate height and direction of the moon at the time it was sighted.

According to the DJA, the agency, island magistrate courts, island council offices and atoll councils will remain open from 5:30 pm on Wednesday until a decision is made on the Shawwal moon sighting.

Members of the public who observe the moon are urged to report the sighting and provide the relevant information as soon as possible.

Based on the calendar and astronomical calculations, Ramadan is expected to complete 30 days this year, with Eid forecast to fall on Friday next week.
