Haze and high temperatures intensified across Maldives today, with air quality monitors recording elevated pollution levels in several areas.

Air quality monitoring systems showed concerning readings, particularly in the capital region. A monitor installed at the Maldives National University’s Centre for Maritime Studies campus in Vilimale' recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 144, while a privately installed monitor in Male' recorded an AQI of 101.

Data from monitoring systems across the country showed average air quality levels above 69 AQI.

According to air quality standards, readings above 50 AQI indicate moderate conditions where precautions are recommended, while levels above 100 AQI pose risks to vulnerable groups.

The haze typically occurs during the Iruvai monsoon, when atmospheric pollution from northern India drifts across the region.

Alongside the haze, temperatures have also risen sharply. The Maldives Meteorological Service recorded a “feels like” temperature of 35.2 degree Celsius in Male' at 11:00am.

The sun usually reaches peak intensity around 2:00pm, and at that time on Monday the “feels like” temperature across the country exceeded 35 degree Celsius.

Temperatures in many parts of the Maldives have been climbing since last month as the Iruvai monsoon season, which runs from January to June, typically brings the hottest weather of the year. April is usually the warmest month.

The highest temperature ever recorded in the Maldives was 48 degree Celsius on April 1, 2024 in Male'.

Meteorologists say humidity during this period makes conditions feel hotter than the actual temperature, as calm winds allow moisture to remain in the air.

Today marks the 11th day of the seventh Nakaiy of the Iruvai monsoon, a period typically associated with clearer skies and fewer clouds.
