Fenaka Corporation has awarded a Dubai company the project to build a powerhouse in Addu for the purpose of finding a permanent solution for the electricity issue.
The agreement signing took place yesterday at Fenaka's head office, with Managing Director Mohamed Najah signing on the company's behalf. The project was awarded to Dubai's Definite Solutions, with Founder and CEO Abdulla Saeed signing on behalf of the company.
Fenaka told state media PSM that the project is worth USD 31 million.
Engines from Belgian company Anglo Belgian Corporation (ABC) will be used in the powerhouse, with engines from the European brand being modern, low speed engines compared to the high speed engines currently in Addu, stated Fenaka to PSM.
While the project to build a new powerhouse in Addu was awarded to China's Dongfang Electric Corporation in 2024, Fenaka told PSM that the agreement has been voided as the project did not move forward.

At the launch event for PNC's "The Greater Addu" campaign at the Artificial Beach in preparation for the upcoming Local Council Election on 4th April, President Muizzu said that the agreement that was signed will solve Addu's electricity issues for the next 20 years.
"A system that will provide 26 megawatts of electricity will hopefully be established under this agreement," said the President.
"The project will be fully completed by July 2027, with it solving Addu's electricity issues for the next 20 years."

President Muizzu stated that councils have been given many responsibilities and power within the decentralization system and that this power can be used to stop many things and present obstacles, with the city council having the opportunity to derail the powerhouse project as well.
The President repeatedly stated that PNC members should be elected to Addu City Council in the upcoming Local Council Election so that the path to stop such important projects can be closed.
The electricity being interrupted in Addu has become a major issue and has gone on for quite some time. President Muizzu gave his assurance last night that this government will bring about a permanent solution to the matter, something that previous governments have not solved.
