Home Minister Ali Ihusan has said allegations against Deputy Commissioner of Police Farhad Fikry, who has been temporarily entrusted with the management of the Maldives Police Service, have not been proven.
Farhad assumed the role of acting commissioner of police following the retirement of Ismail Naveen. Earlier, after former commissioner Ali Shujau retired, Farhad was initially assigned the position on an interim basis before the decision was reversed amid criticism on social media and Naveen was appointed instead.
Farhad has faced allegations of using his influence to protect his son after he was arrested on February 27, 2025 for allegedly assaulting a police officer while intoxicated.
Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office, Ihusan said the allegations had been investigated by relevant institutions and none had informed him that action had been taken against Farhad.
“The case has been declared unproven against Farhad,” the minister said.
“Therefore, if we are responsible for examining allegations against people and taking action where necessary, we cannot take unfair action against those who do not require it.”
Minister Ihusan added that Farhad’s appointment as acting commissioner was not a decision taken by the ministry but an automatic process under the law. When the position of commissioner of police becomes vacant, a deputy commissioner must assume the role temporarily, and Farhad is currently the only officer at that rank.
Farhad was among seven senior officers dismissed by the Police Board on August 10, 2021 under the Police Service Act following an investigation into whether commissioned officers had abused their authority.
However, the Civil Court later ruled that Farhad had been wrongly dismissed. The prosecution initially appealed the ruling but later withdrew the case.
