The Criminal Court has sentenced to prison an individual who attacked a witness in a separate court case on the street.
The state charged the individual with assault.
The charges were pressed for assaulting the witness as retribution for a statement they had given in court in an earlier case. The witness had been attacked while they had been on the pavement of Boduthakurufaanu Magu by the accused in the earlier case, who had been accompanied by a number of other individuals.
The individual admitted in court to the assault. His admission led the court to give him a lighter sentence.
The individual has been sentenced to 1 month and 15 days in prison. However, as he had been held in remand for 75 days during investigation, the court considered it time served, and he has no additional days to serve in prison.
