Higher Education Ministry has decided to allow students to apply for student loans throughout the year, removing the fixed application deadline that previously limited access to the scheme.

Higher Education Minister Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed spoke of the change at a press conference at the President’s Office, saying the current system which opens applications only during specific periods has caused some students to miss opportunities.

Minister Haidar said significant changes will be introduced to the student loan scheme, including the introduction of Sharia compliant loans.

“This time, the new loans will be open for the whole year without an application deadline,” the minister said.

“Previously, students had a specific deadline for applying for loans, which made it difficult for some to apply.”

Under the revised system:

  • Students will be able to apply for loans more easily throughout the year
  • Required documentation will be revised
  • Applicants must submit all necessary documents, including Maldives Qualifications Authority (MQA) approval and proof of admission to a programme
  • Students must also provide the programme’s fee structure when applying

Minister Haidar said the new loan scheme will open in the week following the last 10 days of Ramadan.

Government offices are scheduled to reopen on March 22 after the last 10 days of Ramadan and Eid holiday.
