On the island of B. Fulhadhoo, where local tourism is rapidly expanding, the council has decided to fine tourists who are wearing bikinis in public spaces, an act in breach of general social norms.
Fulhadhoo Council announced that they have been receiving numerous complaints about how tourists are dressed while in public spaces. The Council said that the issue persists, despite several attempts to find a resolution.
The council has now decided to fine tourists MVR 750 for attire that violates general social standards, with the policy taking effect today.
The issue has surfaced beyond Goidhoo as well, with a petition recently submitted to parliament calling for action on tourists wearing revealing clothing in public areas on islands with local tourism.
Islands with expanding local tourism have designated tourist zones and beaches where visitors may dress freely, but more modest clothing is expected in public areas shared with the local community.
