A total of 44 land plots have been allocated for the relocation of residents from Meemu atoll Raimmandhoo to Kaafu atoll Thulusdhoo.
In a letter sent last Wednesday to the Raimmandhoo Island Council, the Ministry of Housing confirmed that the plots have been designated in Thulusdhoo to facilitate the relocation process. The ministry stated that necessary steps would now be taken to implement the move, according to the letter signed by State Minister Ahmed Nazim Mohamed.
Raimmandhoo, home to a population of approximately 300 people, has experienced differing views among residents regarding relocation. The matter gained national attention last year when President Muizzu visited the island in September to hear directly from residents about their concerns.
A petition signed by residents seeking relocation to another island was also submitted to the President. President Muizzu has previously stated that efforts would be made to resolve the differences of opinion surrounding the relocation.
The government announced plans to relocate residents of Haa Dhaalu Hirimaradhoo to Hanimaadhoo in the same atoll due to population decline. The decision was announced by President Muizzu in August last year.
